My name is Cindy Streva and I teach English/Language Arts at T. H. Harris. My students had the opportunity to visit The Mint and then take a tour of the reconstruction in the 9th Ward. The field trip had a profound impact on my students. To help them express their thoughts and feelings about what they learned and what the saw, they did a technology project. This project consisted of the students viewing pictures taken on the field trip, writing/editing a reflection of what that image meant, and going to Flickr to create their final product. Once in the website, the students coordinated the color scheme and background images to compliment the picture they chose to represent what the learned or felt on the trip. They developed appropriate titles and subtitles to set up the image and their written reflections about the experience. It was a wonderful experience both educationally and personally. My students expressed how this short journey not only gave them a deeper appreciation for the art, but a deeper understanding of what an impact Katrina still has on the residents of New Orleans. Enjoy!
